The internet has brought forth a wealth of exciting technologies and developments, but in my opinion, one of the most incredible tools has to be the humble web camera. Usually abbreviated to web cam, these small devices which can cost about the same as a mouse, are capable of broadcasting good quality images or video across the internet for anyone interested. We don’t need to rely on photographs or the printed word to understand what a country looks like, or what it’s weather is like - within a few seconds I can be looking at a live video image of almost anywhere in the world I have an interest in.
Overseas property investors have always been faced with a dilemma, even before they have chosen the country they would like to invest in. Some people will go simply for the more traditional locations, such as Spain, or places they have been to themselves personally before. This has the advantage that they know the country, and know what it is like - but what if you are considering investing in those countries that are only just beginning to be considered suitable investment locations? You can’t visit them all very easily, and if you rely on glossy leaflets and websites you’re left wondering whether the photo has been spruced up a little, or taken on one of the hottest and most amazing summer days they’ve ever had.
It’s not just overseas investors of course who need to be in two or more places at once - there are those simply looking at taking a holiday in a country they’ve never been to before, for example. With the massive decrease in the cost of traveling, with cheap flights and discounted cruises, the world has shrunk it would seem over the last few years, in all but geographical terms. We’re able to afford to fly half way round the world, stay in exotic locations, or even purchase property thousands of miles from where we live. The capability has shrunk the world, but there is still the physical distance at the end of the day.
This of course is where web cams come into their own, and provide a wonderful alternative to traveling thousands of miles just to see a place for yourself. Whether you are looking at investing in property in a particular location, or going on holiday there, being able to watch a live video from that location means that you can see for yourself what it’s really like, and not just rely on leaflets and pictures which may have been spruced up a bit.
There’s nothing quite like being able to peer through the winter gloom and cold greyness, or stare out through the window in your office at the wider world, and then log on to a web cam somewhere and admire the summer sun and golden beaches of your favorite destination. It may even be that you own property abroad, and it could be that you’re able to admire the view from your very own balcony! For holidaymakers, you could admire the view you’ll be seeing for real very soon, or the view you had from your hotel room last time you went away.

Web cams offer another very real advantage for those who have purchased property abroad and are planning to let it out for at least some of the time. Your customers may well be delighted with the wonderful photographs you can show them, but as with anyone, they may have doubts as to what it really is like. If you have a web cam, or access to a web cam that’s based nearby, you can simply allow your potential residents to check it out, and see exactly what the place and the climate is like, at any time of the day or night.
There is a further benefit of having a web cam installed in any property you own. If the camera either overlooks your property, or is based within it so that it shows an internal view of your property, quite apart from being a major selling point for potential residents, you can keep an eye on your property whilst it is empty, and help to increase security. Most web cams allow you to take advantage of motion sensing, taking video only when motion is detected. Obviously once the property is occupied you’d need to remove the cameras for privacy reasons.
It still seems incredible to me now that, as I sit here with the wind buffeting my window, the rain half- heartedly smearing my view of the grey skies, my monitor is happily displaying live video from Javea, with white topped waves chasing one another gaily across the golden sands that stretch for miles, watched over by the distant mountains and an endless sky which seems to challenge my idea of blue. With live video fed to me from anywhere in the world, and virtual tours of properties across the globe, what does the future of technology hold for us, to make the next continent just that little bit closer?
